What cell phone company will purchase the new government frequency being sold?

by admin on September 30, 2009

My cell phone plan expires 2-9-08 so I will be on a month to month basis with Att. I want to get a new cell phone w/o having to pay full price. The only wan to do that is to renew my contract. I do NOT want to renew my contract with Att if they are not the ones that are going to be purchasing the government frequency that they are auctioning off.

I heard it’s the frequency that they are discontinuing for TV’s in 2009.

Does anyone have any incite on who might be the cell phone carrier to purchase it? I heard this news on NPR, but they didn’t say who was the most likely to buy it.

The 700mhz frequency is still being debated, and it might not be a major telco that buys it. (Hopefully not ATT since they have a long history of colluding with government officials to illegally spy on users).

Google has the power and finances to potentially buy the spectrum. There’s a slim possibility that they win it, and they will open the spectrum to people to open development, and maybe offer free wireless phone service (ad supported) to everyone.

Anyone else winning the spectrum will just ensure that they will try to keep it private, blocked off from public use even though the spectrum is property of the people, and charge for access to it for whatever plans they have.

No one really knows who is going to buy all of it. I doubt any one company will buy all of it. It has been rumored that Google is very interested, and they seem to have the upside. I really think google will buy the majority of the spectrum. Then they will use it for nation wide Wi-Fi. Its had to tell now. If you want to wait a year and see you can do that.
